Chapter Nine

Attending the kink party had been a wise decision. For days afterward, we couldn’t stop thinking about it, talking about it. It rejuvenated our interest in doing scenes together, and now I alternated with Vincent and Matteo in terms of running things. They both preferred to sub, but the occasional foray into dominance wasn’t a problem.

I praised Vincent for his ability to take on the dominant role in public. I’d worried he’d be shy at the play party, but he’d exceeded all of my expectations.

I had resolved to make a continuous effort to include Juno and Charles in our lives, as well as Daphne, although she was busy with Alexander and didn’t have much free time.

Matteo kept close tabs on Zarah, making sure she was all right. It looked as though he had frightened her ex, Dennis, enough that he stayed out of Zarah’s way. According to Matteo, she’d enlisted a male friend to go pick up the things she wanted from the house. It wasn’t much. She intended to make a fresh start. It was a relief in the sense that she’d gotten away, her ex didn’t know she was pregnant, none of his loser friends knew and she had us and a circle of other people who could help with whatever she needed.

Matteo was still reeling from the discovery that Zarah did indeed want him in her life again, that she’d been gaslighted into excluding him in the first place and that he had a grandchild on the way.

“Life is crazy, huh?” I said to him.

“It can be. I can’t regret what happened, because I may never have ended up making my way to you and Vincent if I’d had more demands on my time. So, yes, I’m thrilled I have you both, and now I get Zarah and her baby, too.”

I circled his neck with my arm and bent him to my level, kissing his head. “And we get all that, too.”

He eyed me curiously. “Are you going to be okay with a baby around?”

I blinked. “Well, I mean, it’s not going to live here, right?” I started to feel a bit queasy.

He laughed. “No. But I may want to look after my grandchild for an occasional weekend, so I can give Zarah a break.”

I thought about what it would mean to have an infant around on an occasional basis. It wasn’t something I was all that excited about. But if it meant making Matteo happy and helping Zarah out, I could put up with it.

“Hell, Matteo, if you’d told me three years ago I’d be living with two men and parenting a teenager, I would have laughed in your face and told you that was impossible. But I’ve learned to take what life throws at me and be grateful.”

The door pushed open as Taylor came in from outside and clapped his gloved hands together. “Fuck, it’s cold out there.” He dropped his bag and toed off his boots. “What’s for supper, Matteo?”

“Your favorite.”

“Oh, fuck yes.” Taylor fist-pumped the air and took off his jacket.
